In fact, it’s more than just nice to know – it’s the most
important thing in the world.
We are all connected by our common experiences and feelings.
We are connected by our humanity.
And if we know anything at all in the scientific community,
or even deep within ourselves if we’re willing to listen, it’s that we ‘the
human race’ are designed for connection.
Biologically, socially, psychologically, spiritually –
everything points to not only a desire for connection, but a NEED for it.
So I shouldn’t be surprised by how comforting it was to
watch this video and hear this girl’s story.
This week I’ve begun planning for my college commencement
ceremony that is taking place in June. In a little over three months I will be
a college graduate. And with that knowledge I start to freak out a little bit. After
school, what’s next?...
Will or can I get a job, where and when should I move out, how
am I going to afford to move out, how do I live on my own, how can I reasonably
provide for myself, should I compromise what I want to do for what I *think* I’m
actually capable of doing, what am I willing and unwilling to risk?
A million questions and worries begin to overwhelm me.
But then I watch things like this video and I remember that the
space I’m in right now is so incredibly normal. This transition into ‘adulthood’
is a natural process of life. The stress, worry, and uncertainty it’s not
something that I should try and hide or be embarrassed about. It’s what it
means to be alive.
I wouldn’t be growing if I wasn’t being tested.
But more to the point – knowing that I’m just like every
other ’20-something’ really does comfort me. I’m not separate or different or
weak or weird.
I’m right where she is.
I’m trying.
And for now, that’s all I can do.
